How I Started My Notary Business — A Journey of Faith and Purpose

Starting my notary business wasn’t just a career move. It was a calling. My Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, gave me the inspiration, direction, and courage to step into this new chapter of my life.

For as long as I can remember, I have been in the field of Human Resources. I even launched my own HR consulting company while working full-time. But after I was laid off and the job market became increasingly uncertain, I leaned on my HR consulting business for income. I am still working in HR consulting today. You will find services on my website, such as I-9 verifications and employee handbooks, and I continue to serve my existing clients.

But my notary business marks a new beginning, one where I am building from scratch as a fully devoted Christian entrepreneur, trusting God as my business partner and employer every step of the way.

I used to pray and tell the Lord that I wanted a career path that would allow me to have my dream job, one where I could earn an income, manage my time effectively, and travel, and most importantly, serve and live out my purpose. God heard that prayer, and this notary business is part of His answer.

From Inspiration to Action

The name Five Star Notary Service came through prayer and inspiration. Once I had it, I moved forward with practical steps:

  • I registered my business on Sunbiz (Florida’s official business registry).

  • I applied for a tax ID (EIN) through the IRS.

  • I registered my domain name with GoDaddy to secure my online identity.

  • I opened business bank accounts with Space Coast Credit Union. (If you’re looking for a startup-friendly bank, I highly recommend them. They offer free business checking and savings accounts, which is a blessing when you’re getting started.)

  • I set up a Google Business email so I could have a professional business email address.

  • I set up my business phone number through Zoom. I like Zoom because it allows me to route calls from both of my businesses to one line and use Zoom video for client meetings. Many business owners also use Google Voice without issue, making it another good option to consider, depending on your needs.

  • I hired a designer on Fiverr for my logo.

  • I researched the industry thoroughly. I spent hours learning how notaries earn income, different service niches, pricing strategies, and how to structure my offerings.

  • I built my website. I am not a web developer, but thanks to tools like Wix and Squarespace, I was able to create a site that reflects my vision. Let me tell you, I now understand why professional web design can be expensive. It’s time-consuming, but what you see today is the result of hard work, late nights, and dedication.

  • I created business profiles on Google Business, LinkedIn, YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram to reach a wider audience and share my services with the community.

  • I used Etsy for flyer and capability statement templates, which are affordable and easy to customize.

  • I used Canva to design my letterhead and other business documents.

  • I ordered a business ID badge from Zazzle to present to clients during appointments, which adds a layer of professionalism.

Additional Steps I Recommend

If you’re thinking of starting your own mobile or remote online notary business, here are other important steps to consider:

  • Get commissioned and bonded (required in most states).

  • Secure Errors and Omissions insurance (E&O), which protects you from liability if a mistake happens.

  • Invest in a reliable printer, scanner, and a stable internet connection, essential tools for mobile and online notarization.

  • Learn your state’s notary laws and best practices is key to serving clients with excellence and integrity.

  • Consider joining a professional association, such as the National Notary Association, for access to resources and ongoing education.

  • Create a simple marketing plan, even a basic strategy for social media posts, flyers, and word-of-mouth referrals, will help your business grow.

My Journey Continues

I’m thrilled to be on this journey. I’m not doing it alone. I have Jesus Christ guiding me, my supportive family, and my brother working alongside me. This business is more than a source of income. It’s a testimony of faith, obedience, and purpose.
